Using Your Eggs

When you are ready to use your frozen eggs to try and have a baby, it is time to see your specialist to develop a treatment plan.

Upon your request, your eggs will be thawed by removing them from the freezing solution and quickly warming them in special solutions.

After a short recovery, the eggs are ready for insemination, usually by injecting a single sperm into the egg (ICSI). After fertilisation, the egg becomes an embryo, and an embryo transfer (IVF) is performed if the lining of your uterus is optimal for success.

Note: There is no test for egg quality. The only way to know if your egg is chromosomally normal is to attempt to fertilise it, and if fertilisation is successful, to perform a genetic test (PGT) on the subsequent embryo. This reduces the chance of miscarriage (even when using IVF) as your body will naturally try to miscarry an abnormal embryo.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a procedure used to inject a single sperm into an egg.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a procedure used to inject a single sperm into an egg. Normally this procedure is only used for patients that have poor sperm quality and where we suspect that sperm may not be able to fertilise eggs on their own. However, due to the hardening of the zona that occurs with vitrification, all vitrified eggs are fertilised using the ICSI procedure. The changes in the zona prevent sperm from penetrating in the normal way, and each egg has to be individually injected with a single sperm.
